Janice Gail came to Hawaii in the early 1980's, attracted by the beauty, the light, and the Aloha spirit.  From her childhood home in California, where she began drawing at age three, her education and life as an artist has led her through an array of experiences.  Trained in Design and Illustration, she has drawn and painted her way through diverse subject matter in a variety of media:  Portraits and the Figure, Floral and Still Life, Landscapes & Seascapes in Oil, Pastel, Pencil, Watercolor, and Pen & Ink.

There have been many Solo Exhibitions and Group Shows, both in Hawaii and on the Mainland, with Juried Exhibitions resulting in First and Second Awards; the most prestigious of these being a Purchase Award by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Janice has been commissioned to create murals and installations for some of Hawaii's most beautiful homes, and her Home Portraits have drawn commissions from full and part-time residents as well. Many of her paintings have found their way into private collections all over the world. Janice is represented by The Harbor Gallery at Kawaihae; the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea; Waipi`o Valley Artworks in Kukuihaele; Taro Patch Gifts in Honokaa, and the Woodshop Gallery in Honomu.

Janice also teaches; there are private and group Plein-Aire (Outdoor Painting) Lessons available throughout the year, workshops for Adults and Children, and private lessons at her garden studio in Honokaa.

About her work, Janice says:  "My background is in Illustration, but within that framework of semi-realism is the desire to create a mood, and the mood I most desire is one of Peace.  Even in my more dramatic moments, regardless of the medium, I seek stillness and a quiet heart.  I suppose that explains my enduring love of Watercolor, and my frequent use of reflection. There is a subtle harmony in color composition that attracts me; I hear notes and tones and chords in the color groups, and, as in music,  a resolved chord gives me the calming effect I long for.  I believe that art, all of it, is the language of Heaven; that we are closest to our Creator when we are creating, and the expression of a universal "Aloha Spirit" is our assignment."
